One of the new services we provide at IT’S LIT Weddings & Events is decorative lighting rental. In this blog post we will discuss what string lighting is, and how it differs from other types of string and twinkle lighting. We will also briefly discuss what string lighting is as a category, and the other options of string, twinkle, and bistro lighting (sometimes called market lighting) that we offer and companies also typically offer for this type of lighting.
What is String Lighting?
String lighting is a general term generally used to describe individual lights that hang from a stringer or wire. There are many types of string lighting, and most holiday lights can be considered string lights, but so can bistro lighting (which we also offer). String lights can be seen everywhere from weddings to people’s holiday decor displays. Don’t be fooled though, not all string lighting is created equal. Much like our blog post on bistro lighting, string lighting comes in many forms and has even more potential for misconceptions. There are many different levels of string lighting which we will discuss in this post, but if you need string lighting for your wedding, our services are likely a great fit for you!
What is the Difference Between Twinkle Lighting and String Lighting?
As mentioned in the previous paragraph, twinkle lighting is (technically) a type of string lighting. String lighting itself can come in many different variations so it’s important to look at actual installation photos from the company you decide to hire to make sure that what they provide, is what you’re looking for. Many people use the two terms interchangeable even though that can cause problems. Twinkle lighting is generally not recommended for professional use unless it uses incandescent bulbs, due to the way LED bulbs twinkle, it can cause a problem where on camera the lights may appear to be off when they are actually on! While its not directly referenced in our marquee letter bulb guide, it does apply similarly for those LED bulbs.
What is String Lighting Used for?
String lights are versatile, widely used for ambient wedding lighting and capable of so much more. Depending on density and pairing with elements like bistro lights or drapery, they can illuminate entire rooms and even create visual space dividers. Their compact nature allows for unique applications, such as integrated lighting within draped backdrops.

Wedding Lighting
String lighting and twinkle lighting are a great fit for many wedding venues, with a variety of styles, sizes, and colors, it can fit any wedding need. String lighting is often part of a larger drapery and decor installation, which is a key service offered by a decor and rental company like IT’S LIT RI.
Tent Lighting
String and twinkle lighting is one form of string lighting that can be done inside of a tent. Oftentimes tent companies will have some form of lighting installed in the tent when setting up for safety. String lighting and drapery can enhance the look of a simple tent immensely, and smaller string lights and twinkle lights can add lighting to a clear top frame tent without taking away from the amazing views.
Who Provides String Lighting Rental in RI/MA?
Similar to bistro lighting rental, string lighting is provided by a number of different companies, and usually it’s not the only service that a company provides. For example, tent rental companies generally provide some lighting options, decor companies generally offer a mix of bistro lighting, other types of string lighting as well as additional decor, such as greenery attached to the lighting and drapery.
